We are media stars!

Well at least in the wonderful world of UWE anyhow! Yeah that's right this occupation is "breaking news", we are the most exciting thing to be happening on campus right now!

Here's the report in Western Eye.

  5. Media stars for all the wrong reasons. I went to lectures in 2B25 today and some man was asking for donations for "hospital beds" where clearly this whole sit in is politically motivated. This is not just about helping Gazans but about forcing people to take a political side and so should not be misrepresented under the guise of "charity" or humanitarian aid. I hope the university ejects you soon as some of us do not want to be tarred with the same brush.

  6. So asking for donations for hospital beds is somehow nothing to do with humanitarian aid but is politically motivated? Tens of thousands are homeless. Schools and hospitals reduced to rubble, people short of food and fuel and in your mind asking people to support them is politically motivated!
I am not at this university but I was really impressed with this occupation. At last the younger generation seem to care about the important issues. My (older) generation screwed things up but you are the future.
I salute all students involved in this action and hope there are not too many cynical youngsters like the above. Keep up the good work and well done.

  7. Virtally everyone I have talked to both inside and outside the university supports the actions of the students. What on earth is Anonymous (2 above) talking about. All the demands seem to be about helping Gazans. That is about humanity not politics. Refusing to help people in dire need is taking a political stance not the other way round

  8. The demands are one thing, many of them were fine but demanding under banners "stop the holocaust," leaflets talking about israeli oppression, and in face of Palastinian flags plastered everywhere makes one wonder how far the money donated will actually go to hospital beds and how much will fund - eg. protests in London. Legally "political" includes any action designed to change laws or decisions of governments abroad and should not be mingled with concepts of charity.

  9. Well seeing as the whole Israeli occupation is illegal by international law, all that is being asked here is for the law to be upheld not changed so by your definition ths is non political.
By the way the blockade was declared illegal under international law, the use of phospherous and dime bombs was illegal, the building of settlements is illegal. People are suffering beyond your imagination because of this illegality and helping them is morally right.
I think the students at UWE who organised this are DEFINITELY doing the right thing and thank God some people stand up for what is right when they need to. The world is better for them

  10. That Gazans are suffering is undisputed, helping them is also noble, scoring cheap political points off of that suffering by strongly influencing donors to subscribe to take a side in blaming Israel is disingenuous. The conflict continues partly because of the way each side plays the blame game.
